Fall of the Lich King - Patch 3.3
Well, it's here folks. The Fall of the Lich King has been live on the servers for about a week and I've had time to take a look at some of the new content. There has been some amazing content addition and updates that are worth mentioning here.
First, there was no talent tree changes significant enough to warrant a refund of points so you don't need to go and add points back in on your character. The thing that strikes you when you first log in to create a new character is that race and class abilities have a new description screen. You will have a much better idea about what each of the different classes can do and what their expected roles in solo or party play will be. That does not mean that each class is locked down as Blizzard does a great job in these descriptions of laying out what all the optional builds are for each class.
Next, new characters are no longer "born" with food and water. Who ever used those anyway? I usually removed those from my inventory. There are some other changes to brand new characters such as reduced mana for casters of all types. Mana reduced by how much, I have no idea, but I know that it feels like it. I could be mistaken on that. Rogues are now "born" with dual wield from level 1. That is very handy and a much appreciated change to that class.
There are some beautiful pictures of the new Tier 10 armor up on Blizzard's site. For those of us with some lvl 80 characters, it really does make the idea of raiding enticing once more. And speaking of raiding and instances...Icecrown Citadel. Yes, this is a high level zone of Northrend. New players, excuse me for a moment while I talk to the 80 crowd here for a moment.
Ok guys. Reign up your flying mounts. Give the Argent Tournament grounds a break and head for Icecrown Citadel. The story is that Lady Sylvanas and her band of Abominations from Undercity have moved to bust right in on the Lich King. Through a side entrance into Icecrown itself, you will find 3 portals to the available new 5-man instances. Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron and the Halls of Reflection. While each has it's own entrance, you can also transition from one to the next all while following Lady Sylvanas through one of the most engaging story line developments I think I've ever experienced in WoW.
I'll not give too much of the story away here but suffice to say that it is brilliantly executed and beautifully displayed with new npc and boss fights that will test your party and reward success with great new epic loot drops. Gear your character and deck him out with new armor and weapons, trinkets and badges.
Now, the best of the best. The new Dungeon System. It's been all I could do not to spend the entire article here talking about this brand new game feature. It is revolutionary and will change the way all characters, from 1 to 80, play this game. The old LFG system would have you looking for groups for questing to running instances. Blizzard at least paid attention that no one was using it. It was clunky when it was released and quickly realized that it was overall useless to most of us players. Thusly it became a button on my action bar that was all but ignored. Now, the rules have changed.
Opening the new Dungeon System provides you with the opportunity to join with forces from all servers to run a random or specific dungeon instance. And yes, you read that right. ALL servers. No longer are you limited to your server and its high level runners or low population. The dungeon system is searching through an estimated 11 million players to put together a group and get you running the instance of your choice quickly. In my own experience, I have waited no longer than 5 minutes to run instances. It is simply amazing and I am so impressed with this new feature that I spent a couple of days ago doing nothing but running random instances to gear up my lvl 80 Blood Elf Death Knight.
There are still so many more changes that I haven't had the chance to touch on but suffice to say that Fall of the Lich King - Patch 3.3 is one of the most successful and noteworthy patches to come from Blizzard in a while. To read more on the patch, click here.
